Altitudinal adaptation and parallel evolution of forest trees: applications for forest conservation under climate change
Project ID 303
ID B93C15000020001
Acronym ADAPTFOREST Italy/Japan
Project acronym and title Altitudinal adaptation and parallel evolution of forest trees: applications for forest conservation under climate change
Contract B93C15000020001
Description The main aim of the project is to estimate the adaptive potential of forest tree species, upon which most ecosystems depend in order to enable the development of strategies to improve adaptability and resilience of declining forest genetic resources. The main expected impact of the project is to provide the Italian and Japanese forestry sectors with better knowledge, methods and tools for improving the capability of mountain ecosystems to respond in terms of adaptation and resilience to future climate changes. This is in accordance with the priorities foreseen by the most important National agendas that encourage researches aimed at developing suitable strategies for mitigation and adaptation of forests to climate change. By providing well-grounded evidence describing how genotypes and phenotypes that persist under different selective pressures along altitudinal transects are linked in natural populations, the outcomes of the project will serve as a basis for the development of suitable strategies to improve adaptability and resilience of declining forest genetic resources at local and national scale. This project focuses on forest tree species in three genera: Fagus, Juniperus, and Sorbus, whose distributions are characterized by a wide altitudinal span, and which are naturally widespread in cool temperate and subalpine forests in Europe and Asia.
