Dr. Sabrina Margarucci graduated in Biology at the University of Naples in 1995 and received her Doctorate (Ph.D.) from the University of Naples in 2000. Currently, she is Researcher at IBBR.

Most part of her research activity has been conducted in the study of the effect of specific nutrients, such as carnitines, on mitochondrial function and whether perturbation of the carnitine system can lead to diseases and cancer. In particular, her work is orientated:

- to develop selective treatments for pathologies presenting metabolic inflexibility (neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, etc.);

- to identify and characterize the carnitine system in different models;

- to study the use of carnitine derivatives as anticancer drugs based on their effects on the invasive potential of tumour cell lines.

Current Projects

The group’s major projects are:

  1. PON01_02512: “Ricerca e sviluppo di bioregolatori attivi sui meccanismi epigenetici dei processi infiammatori nelle malattie croniche e degenerative”.
  2. PON01_01802: Sviluppo di molecole capaci di modulare vie metaboliche intracellulari redox-sensibili per la prevenzione e la cura di patologie infettive, tumorali, neurodegenerative e loro delivery mediante piattaforme nano tecnologiche.
