Characterization and Evaluation of Accessions
Activities carried out at the MG seed collection include the characterization and evaluation of accessions. The characterization step is performed through the analysis of morpho-agronomic and nutritional traits, and the use of biochemical and molecular markers.
Data for each accession are collected using the following descriptors (UPOV and/or IPGRI):
- Passport descriptors
- Management descriptors
- Environment and site descriptors
- Characterization descriptors
- Evaluation descriptors
Quantitative traits databases
Several (partial) databases of quantitative traits (morphometry, phenology, etc) are curretly available for the accessions stored at the MGD seed bank:
The wheat morphometric database
(Triticum turgidum/aestivum)
Traits included: plant height, heading, etc.; spike shape, density, awns, etc.; glumes color, size, hairness, etc.; seed color, vitrousness, etc.; mean spikelet number per spike, etc.
Records included: 12622
The spelt morphometric database
(hulled wheat - Triticum spelta)
Traits included: plant production, height, earing and maturation dates, etc.; spike number, shape, length, density and weight; spikelet number, sterile spikelet number, seeds per spike, etc;
Records included: 619
The pea morphometric database
(Pisum sativum)
Traits included: plant habit, branching, etc.; leaf color, shape, margin, wax presence, etc.; flower color, size, date, etc.; pod length, width, shape, color, etc.; tolerance to fusarium, blight, ascochyta, mildew, etc.
Records included: 3139
The vetches morphometric database
(Vicia spp.)
Traits included: plant height, stem color; flower number and color, flowering date, etc.; leaflet shape, size; pod density and number; pod insertion angle, distribution along the stem, etc..
Records included: 1875
